1. Wear a helmet
Just as in the case of motorcycles, cycles also require helmets. Wear it every single time you go on a ride. The helmet should sit on top of your head in a level position. The helmet should fit comfortably and not move when you move your head from side to side.
2. Be visible 
Sometimes it's hard for drivers to see cyclists because of the size. It is extremely crucial, especially in the early morning and at dawn, to wear bright-coloured clothing. Wear a brightly-coloured helmet so you'll be easier to spot.
3. Bike check
Before going on the open roads, do an initial check up of the bike. Check if the brakes are working correctly. Clean the reflectors. Check that the air pressure in the tyres is adequate. Adjust the seat according to height that is comfortable.
4. Warm up before starting
Before undertaking any strenuous cycling, always warm up your body so as to prevent muscle aches and strains. Do 10 minutes warm up by jogging or by cycling at a gentle pace.
5. Always ride on the correct side of the road
You should always ride on the correct side (left side for UK and right in continental Europe). Always choose an appropriate speed for the road conditions.
6. Highway Code
Just because you are not in a car doesn't mean the Highway Code is not applicable to you. You must obey the Highway Code.
7. Don't make sudden moves
Don't do anything that would surprise a driver, other road users or pedestrians. Remember, the driver in the car might not be able to act quickly and accidents do happen. 8. Be aware your surroundings
Be aware of the conditions you are riding in. Ride defensively. Know what the other traffic is doing. Be prepared to manoeuvre for safety. Keep your eyes open as you never know which car might stop in front of you or who might open the door of a parked car. Always keep a safe distance from other vehicles and the curb.
